What is the History of Overgaard Arizona?

Hello from Horseview Hideaway, the heart of Heber Overgaard! As the proud owner of this delightful retreat, I’ve had the pleasure of immersing myself in the rich history and culture of our beautiful region. Today, I am excited to share with you the intriguing story of how Overgaard, Arizona, came to be the charming community it is today.

The Founding of Overgaard

Initially, the area now known as Overgaard was inhabited by the indigenous tribes of the region, including the Navajo, Hopi, and Apache. However, it wasn’t until the late 19th century that the town began to take shape.

Overgaard was originally established as a stagecoach stop, and it was named after the Overgaard family who were among the earliest settlers. Niels Kristian Overgaard, a Danish immigrant, moved to the region with his family in 1938, and his contributions to the community led to the town being named in his honor. The Overgaard family played a significant role in developing the region’s lumber industry, which was vital for the town’s growth.

More on this part of Overgaard’s history can be found on Navajo County Historical Society.

Growth and Development in the 20th Century

The early 20th century brought considerable development to Overgaard. In the 1950s, the town was connected to the rest of the state via Highway 260, bringing an influx of visitors and leading to the growth of local businesses.

In 1974, Overgaard merged with the neighboring town of Heber, and the combined area is now collectively referred to as Heber Overgaard. The two communities, while legally one, still maintain their individual identities and charm. Are There Bears in Overgaard?

While Overgaard has grown and developed over the years, it has managed to preserve its historical roots. The community remains small and closely knit, with a population that cherishes its history and traditions. The town’s rich past is evident in its well-preserved architecture, local festivals, and the stories shared by its long-term residents.

Modern Overgaard, with its blend of historical charm and contemporary amenities, is a sought-after destination for those looking to escape the bustle of city life. Its beautiful natural surroundings, from the lush Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests to the clear waters of the Black Canyon Lake, offer numerous outdoor recreational activities.
